Menopause: What Your Mother Did Not Tell You

I don’t know about ya’ll but menopause was not a topic spoken about ever. I do not remember an in-depth conversation about what to expect, what my mom’s experience was, and when she went through “the change”.  It was just not talked about. Well, menopause is not taboo. It is not a disease. It is not to be silenced. By the time I started going through peri-menopause, my mom was not around to answer my questions. Before she died, I asked all the questions of her that I thought I would need to sustain me for the rest of my lifetime without her and the topic of menopause and what her experience was, when she went through it and how difficult her journey did not even cross my mind.

I went through menopause thinking it was no more period and hot flashes. That was my understanding of what I would experience. But is it sooooo much more than that! I experienced the crazy periods up to the no periods and the hot flashes that felt like I was burning from the inside out but I also experienced vertigo, heart palpitations, hair loss, insomnia, weight gain, dry skin to name a few.  There are 34 symptoms that you probably did not know were a result of menopause. No one talks about it.

Well, that is changing.

As I started researching what kind of wellness coach I wanted to be, I leaned in on my own experiences with health and wellness and I found that women struggle with understanding what menopause is. I struggled with what menopause was and went through it blind.  More and more women are trying to learn about what is happening with their bodies and not taking that “it is a normal part of a woman’s life” as the only answer out there.

Menopause is not taboo; menopause should be talked about to understand what to expect and how to navigate through all the things.

There is so much to learn and I am here for it all. Each week I will bring you a menopause topic to help you navigate your own journey.
