Asking for Help!
Sometimes, life gets very heavy and as we get older, those times happen a little more often. People get sick, loved ones and friends die, and coping sometimes seems impossible.
I became a wellness coach to help people navigate their wellbeing which is not just losing weight but total wellness. What I do not do is therapy. We are trained to recognize when coaching is moving in to the client needing therapy and when to refer them to a therapist. Just recently, I had to coach myself and realize that I needed something more than the training I have gotten.
I have had a therapist or two in the past and knew recently it was time to seek out someone to talk to. There are things in my life right now that I am needing to be present for but have felt overwhelmed. Not participating in these things that are overwhelming me is not an option so I realized that I need support and tools while I navigate through them.
I know some people do not think talking through things with a therapist is necessary that people should be able to tough it out or pray through it. I believe everyone has a line that if crossed things can go south and although being strong is good and praying is necessary, we are human and are not built for the stress that overwhelm can bring.
I hope and pray that if anyone reading this finds themself in a situation that is overwhelming and help is needed that you will seek help.
If you have health insurance, your employer should have benefits for therapy and counseling. You may want to see if your employer has a EAP (employee assistance program) that offers a number of free sessions before your paid benefits kick in. There are also online therapy such as better help where you can find the right therapist for you.
If you are still unsure about therapy, start by using a journal to write down your feelings to help you sort them out. I encourage journal writing to my clients and it has helped them get their emotions onto paper so they do not feel as overwhelmed.
I encourage you to take care of you. Remember self care is NOT selfish.
